Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was assaulted on Wednesday during her weekly Jan Sunvai (public hearing) at her official residence in Civil Lines.
The attacker has been identified as Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya, a 41-year-old resident of Rajkot, Gujarat, according to police sources.
The Chief Minister arrived at her residence at 8 AM to meet citizens and address grievances, as per routine. While she was interacting with attendees, Rajesh suddenly confronted her, began shouting, and attempted to hand over some documents related to a court case.
Sources said he then hurled a heavy object at Gupta, causing her to fall.
Unverified accounts suggest that he slapped her, pulled her hair, and verbally abused her in front of officials and visitors.
The Delhi Police immediately detained the attacker and began interrogation to establish the motive. Preliminary questioning has confirmed his identity and hometown.
The incident has sparked serious concerns over the Chief Minister’s security. Despite the presence of police personnel and strict arrangements at the residence, Rajesh managed to approach and physically assault her.
A senior officer described the event as a ‘significant lapse’, adding that the Delhi Police will conduct an internal inquiry to determine how such a breach occurred.
Police Commissioner Shashi Bhushan Kumar Singh is personally overseeing the investigation, while the Civil Lines police station has registered a case.
Health condition of the Chief Minister
Gupta was immediately given medical attention after the assault. A doctor is currently monitoring her condition to assess the extent of her injuries. Officials said more details on her health status will be available once the examination is complete.
Meanwhile, senior police officers, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), reached the Chief Minister’s residence to review the situation. Security around her home has since been heightened.
The attack has prompted alarm across the political spectrum, with opposition parties questioning the adequacy of the Chief Minister’s protection. The Delhi Police have assured that the matter is being investigated with utmost seriousness.
According to sources, investigators are examining whether the attack stemmed from personal grievances, political motives, or mental instability.
As the inquiry continues, official confirmation regarding the attacker’s background and the exact sequence of events is awaited.
The incident underscores growing concerns about the safety of public leaders during open forums and is likely to trigger a review of security protocols at high-profile events in the capital.
