Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate two major Delhi highway projects on Sunday, the Delhi stretches of the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) and the Dwarka Expressway, valued at a total of ₹11,000 crore.
The projects aim to reduce traffic congestion and enhance connectivity across the National Capital Region (NCR).
Authorities developed the 54.21km Delhi section of UER-II at a cost of ₹5,580 crore.
Designed as the capital’s third ring road, the six-lane corridor runs from Alipur through Bawana, Rohini, Mundka, Bakkarwala, Najafgarh and Dwarka to Dichaon Kalan.
Officials expect it to significantly ease pressure on Delhi’s Inner and Outer Ring Roads, as well as busy intersections such as Mukarba Chowk and Dhaula Kuan.
Officials project that the corridor will cut travel time between Indira Gandhi International Airport and areas in southwest and northwest Delhi by up to 60 per cent.
The route links Delhi with Bahadurgarh and Sonipat, providing faster industrial connectivity and diverting heavy vehicles from city roads. The full UER-II spans 76km, with 21.5km in Haryana, bringing the total cost to ₹8,000 crore.
Dwarka Expressway: Linking Delhi to Gurugram
The second project includes a 10.1km Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway, built at a cost of ₹5,360 crore. It bypasses the NH-48 Delhi-Gurugram Expressway and provides a direct link from IGI Airport to UER-II, Dwarka and Gurugram.
The corridor connects directly to Yashobhoomi Convention Centre in Dwarka Sector 25, while also ensuring multi-modal integration with Delhi Metro’s Blue and Orange Lines, the upcoming Bijwasan railway station and Dwarka bus cluster.
This Delhi section includes a 5.9km stretch from Shiv Murti to Dwarka Sector 21 and a 4.2km stretch from Sector 21 to the Delhi-Haryana border, featuring a tunnel for uninterrupted traffic flow.
Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the 19km Haryana section of the expressway in March 2024, completing the 28km corridor at a cost of ₹8,611 crore.
A distinctive feature of UER-II is the use of two million tonnes of inert waste material from the Ghazipur landfill.
Officials stated this reduced the waste mound’s height by seven metres while conserving natural resources and lowering construction costs.
“This is sustainable infrastructure that benefits both the environment and commuters,” an NHAI official noted.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta reviewed preparations at the Rohini inauguration site, calling the projects a ‘historic gift’ for the capital.
She said UER-II will not only reduce congestion but also lower vehicular pollution and create industrial corridors. She added that it will improve connectivity to major highways, including the Delhi-Jaipur Highway and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway.
“UER-II will emerge as the backbone of high-speed connectivity, linking Delhi with the NCR and beyond,” she added.
