PM Narendra Modi on Friday urged India’s researchers and entrepreneurs to make the country self-reliant in medicines and health innovation, while issuing a strong public health warning against rising obesity.
PM Modi Pushes for Medical Self-Reliance
In his Independence Day address from the Red Fort, PM Modi called on researchers to establish India as a global hub for medical innovation. He encouraged entrepreneurs to secure patents for new drugs and medical technologies, ensuring India meets its own healthcare needs while contributing to global well-being.
“We must develop our own medicines, vaccines, and life-saving treatments entirely within India,” he said.
The Prime Minister praised India’s indigenous Covid-19 response, including vaccine development and platforms like CoWin, which saved millions of lives worldwide.
He described India as the ‘pharmacy of the world’ and stressed the need to increase investment in research and development.
“Shouldn’t we be the ones providing the best and most affordable medicines for the welfare of humanity?” he asked.
PM Modi cautioned that obesity is emerging as a serious health challenge across India due to sedentary lifestyles and excessive oil consumption.
“Every family should be concerned that in the coming times, every third person will be obese. We must avoid this,” he said.
He advised families to purchase and consume 10% less cooking oil, urging a nationwide lifestyle shift towards healthier eating and exercise.
Sports for a Healthier Generation
Highlighting the transformative role of sports, PM Modi said physical activity is essential for building a healthier, more confident generation.
He encouraged citizens, especially the youth, to embrace active lifestyles as part of the nation’s journey toward improved public health.
