President Murmu Urges AIIMS Doctors To Combine Clinical Precision

President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday called on young doctors to strengthen both their clinical expertise and sensitive communication skills, emphasising that compassionate care is just as important as medical competence.

She delivered this message during the first convocation ceremony of AIIMS Deoghar, where she addressed graduating students and medical professionals.

Doctors Must Be Skilled and Sympathetic: President Murmu

President Murmu advised the new graduates to aim beyond technical mastery and strive to become good doctors, who are both competent and compassionate.

“A good doctor must develop a sharp clinical sense as well as sensitive communication skills,” she said. “We’ve all seen that some doctors, simply through their words, offer comfort to both patients and their families.”

She added, “Doctors must be clinical in diagnosis or surgery, but not clinical in their behaviour. They should offer advice with sympathy and empathy.”

President Murmu encouraged doctors to adopt inclusive healthcare as a personal mission. She stressed that society widely regards an education at AIIMS as a symbol of high medical competence, and graduates must honour that reputation by extending care to all sections of society.

AIIMS and Doctors Have a National Role in Reducing Health Costs

The President highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to reduce out-of-pocket health expenditure for the population. She noted that institutions like AIIMS Deoghar and their doctors have both institutional and individual responsibilities in this national initiative.

“AIIMS and its doctors must actively participate in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to health and medicine,” she said.

She urged all stakeholders of AIIMS Deoghar to collaborate and create a dedicated action plan toward those goals.

Acknowledging India’s ambitious health targets, President Murmu said AIIMS institutions across the country will play a pivotal role in fulfilling national healthcare goals.

Describing them as ‘beacons spreading light in the darkness’, she said, “These institutions must not only offer world-class medical care at affordable costs, but also act as change-agents in transforming the overall healthcare ecosystem.”

President Murmu’s address blended practical guidance with inspiration, urging doctors to combine clinical excellence with compassion and to view their roles as both healers and reformers in India’s rapidly evolving healthcare landscape.
