US President Donald Trump on Thursday (IST) revealed a new partnership with Pakistan to tap into what he called ‘massive oil reserves’, while also suggesting that the resulting energy resources could one day be sold to India.
The announcement came shortly after Trump imposed a 25 per cent tariff on Indian products. He cited concerns over India’s continued purchases of oil and weapons from Russia.
The President shared the news on his platform, Truth Social, writing, “We have just concluded a deal with the country of Pakistan, whereby Pakistan and the United States will work together on developing their massive oil reserves. We are in the process of choosing the oil company that will lead this partnership. Who knows, maybe they’ll be selling oil to India someday!”
The oil deal was made public just one day after Washington announced new trade penalties on New Delhi. The move increases economic pressure as tensions grow over India’s strategic alignment with Russia.
In his post, Trump said his administration was currently in discussions with several other nations regarding trade reforms.
“We are very busy in the White House today working on trade deals. I have spoken to the leaders of many countries, all of whom want to make the United States ‘extremely happy’,” he noted.
South Korea’s Tariffs Also Under Review
Trump also mentioned upcoming talks with a South Korean delegation. He noted that their exports currently face the same 25 per cent tariff.
“They have an offer to buy down those tariffs. I will be interested in hearing what that offer is,” he added.
The President asserted that these agreements are intended to shrink the American trade deficit. He added that full details would be disclosed ‘at the appropriate time’.
When asked by reporters about the new tariffs on Indian goods and the growing friction between the two nations, Trump criticised India’s involvement in BRICS, a group of emerging economies that also includes Russia and China.
“Well, we are negotiating right now, and it’s also BRICS. BRICS, which is basically a group of countries that are anti the United States and India is a member of that if you can believe it. It is an attack on the dollar, and we are not going to let anybody attack the dollar. So it’s partially BRICS and it’s partially trade,” Trump asserted.
He added that further updates on negotiations with India could be expected ‘by the end of this week’.
