Parliamentary proceedings on Monday morning were halted as both Houses were adjourned until noon after Opposition MPs created repeated disruptions.
In the Lok Sabha, the session quickly descended into disorder when members entered the Well of the House, shouting slogans and scattering leaflets. Speaker Om Birla intervened firmly to restore calm but faced continued resistance.
Addressing the uproar, Birla remarked, “Members, you have been demanding a debate on Operation Sindoor, yet you are preventing it from taking place. This behaviour undermines the purpose of the House.”
Turning to Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, he added, “LoP, instruct your MPs to maintain discipline. They are not here to throw papers or block proceedings. The nation can see who is disrupting the Question Hour.”
Despite the warnings, the protests carried on, forcing the Speaker to suspend the sitting until noon. The Rajya Sabha faced a similar scene, leading to its adjournment as well.
Pahalgam terror attack a Central feature of the Monsoon Session
The disruptions preceded the much-anticipated 16-hour discussion on Operation Sindoor, India’s military response to the Pahalgam terror incident, which will serve as a central feature of the Monsoon Session.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will launch the debate, explaining the objectives and outcomes of the operation.
Home Minister Amit Shah and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will support him and outline the government’s security response, while BJP leaders such as Anurag Thakur and Nishikant Dubey will also speak.
On the Opposition benches, Rahul Gandhi and Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge are preparing to counter the government’s narrative.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and other Opposition leaders are preparing to question the planning and impact of the military action.
Recognising the debate’s significance, Congress has issued a strict three-day whip, ensuring all party MPs are present for the session.
Both the ruling coalition and the Opposition aim to shape the national security discourse in the wake of the Pahalgam attack as the Operation Sindoor debate dominates the day.
