Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive at the Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruchirappalli district to commemorate the 1,000th anniversary of Emperor Rajendra Chola I’s celebrated maritime expedition.
The occasion also coincides with the auspicious Aadi Tiruvathirai Festival.
At the heart of the celebrations, PM Modi will unveil a commemorative coin honouring Rajendra Chola I—one of India’s most powerful monarchs—whose naval campaigns significantly extended the Chola empire’s influence across Southeast Asia.

Cultural performances, historical tributes, and a strong emphasis on India’s ancient maritime legacy are set to mark the event.
The Prime Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to preserving India’s historical and cultural heritage, noting that figures like Rajendra Chola I are emblematic of India’s civilizational strength.
Arrival and Key Developments
PM Modi had arrived in Tamil Nadu on Saturday evening following his official visits to the United Kingdom and the Maldives.
He landed at Tuticorin Airport at 7:50 PM, where Governor RN Ravi, Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, and Union Ministers L Murugan and Ram Mohan Naidu welcomed him.

Shortly after his arrival, the Prime Minister inaugurated the new terminal building of Tuticorin Airport, constructed at a cost of ₹452 crore.
He also laid the foundation stones and inaugurated a variety of development projects across critical sectors, totalling over ₹4,900 crore.
Among the key initiatives launched were infrastructure projects worth ₹550 crore in Tuticorin, upgrades in the energy and transport sectors, and works related to the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant.
The government also announced the electrification of the Madurai–Bodinayakkanur railway line, reinforcing its broader focus on boosting connectivity and driving economic growth in southern India.
PM Modi’s presence at the millennium celebrations and the rollout of major infrastructure projects will underscore the government’s dual focus: honouring India’s ancient heritage while investing in its modern future.
His visit aims to further integrate Tamil Nadu’s cultural significance into national development narratives.
