On 25 July 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached a significant political milestone, completing 4,078 consecutive days in office, thereby surpassing Indira Gandhi’s record of 4,077 days.
This makes PM Modi the second-longest-serving Prime Minister in India’s history, behind only Jawaharlal Nehru, who held the office uninterrupted from 1947 to 1964.
This achievement comes during PM Modi’s third term as Prime Minister, a rare political feat in Indian democracy. He is the only non-Congress leader to serve this long and the first Indian Prime Minister born after Independence to hold the post for such a sustained period.
PM Modi’s political journey began in Gujarat, where he served as Chief Minister from 2001 to 2014.
He then led the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to a historic victory in the 2014 general elections, followed by re-election in 2019 and again in 2024 — each time with a clear majority in the Lok Sabha.
This achievement makes him the first non-Congress leader to win two full terms and return for a third with a majority.
