Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media on Tuesday to wish Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar good health after the latter submitted his resignation, citing medical concerns.

Dhankhar, who served as the 14th Vice President of India since August 2022, stepped down on 21 July — the opening day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament.

Posting on X, PM Modi stated, “Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities, including as the Vice President of India. Wishing him good health.”

His message came amid growing curiosity within political circles over the abrupt resignation, with opposition leaders calling for more transparency regarding the decision.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominated Jagdeep Dhankhar as its Vice Presidential candidate in July 2022.

He won the election held on 6 August that year by securing 528 of the 710 valid votes, defeating opposition candidate Margaret Alva. His victory margin of 74.37% was the highest recorded since 1992.

As Vice President, Dhankhar also served as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

During his tenure, he was known for his strict adherence to parliamentary procedure and firm leadership in the House. While some praised his impartiality and discipline, others considered his style uncompromising.

Observers widely regarded Dhankhar, a trained lawyer and experienced politician, as a constitutional expert with a deep understanding of legislative processes.

Resignation and Health Concerns

In his letter to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar cited health issues as the reason for stepping down. He invoked Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution, which allows the Vice President to resign by submitting a written letter to the President.

Reports indicate that Dhankhar underwent several hospitalisations over the past year, most recently in Nainital, though he has not disclosed the specific nature of his illness.

What Happens Next?

Dhankhar’s resignation has triggered the constitutional process for electing a new Vice President. Since the Vice President also acts as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the position cannot remain vacant for long.

Parliamentary experts expect the Election Commission to announce the schedule for the vice-presidential election shortly.

Until the new Vice President takes office, Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh will likely oversee Rajya Sabha proceedings.

PM Modi’s message, conveying respect and goodwill, is likely to prompt responses from political leaders across party lines.

As the country prepares for a transition in one of its highest constitutional posts, the focus now shifts to who the government will nominate for the key role of Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chair.

Many remember Jagdeep Dhankhar’s brief yet eventful tenure for his disciplined handling of parliamentary business and his strong commitment to constitutional principles.
