Adani Power Ltd (APL) has completed the ₹4,000 crore acquisition and resolution plan for Vidarbha Industries Power Ltd (VIPL), the company announced on Tuesday.
With this acquisition, Adani Power’s operational capacity has reached 18,150 MW, reinforcing its status as India’s largest private base load power generation company.
Located in Butibori, Nagpur district, VIPL comprises two units of 300 MW each and operates on domestic coal.
The plant was previously undergoing the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP) under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC).
Following the approval of Adani Power’s resolution plan by the Mumbai Bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) on June 18, 2025, the acquisition was successfully implemented on July 7, 2025.
Commenting on the acquisition, SB Khyalia, CEO of Adani Power Ltd, said, “The acquisition of VIPL is a key milestone in Adani Power’s strategy to unlock value through the turnaround of stressed assets. Future expansion plans
Adani Power is further scaling its base load power generation through a combination of brownfield and greenfield projects.
The company is currently constructing six ultra-supercritical thermal power plants (USCTPP) of 1,600 MW capacity each at existing project sites in Singrauli-Mahan (Madhya Pradesh), Raipur, Raigarh, Korba (Chhattisgarh), and Kawai (Rajasthan).
Additionally, a greenfield USCTPP of 1,600 MW is under construction at Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh.
In a further move to consolidate its footprint, the company is also reviving a previously acquired 1,320 MW supercritical power project in Korba, Chhattisgarh.
Adani Power, part of the diversified Adani Group portfolio, currently operates a 40 MW solar plant in Gujarat, in addition to its extensive thermal power network across several states, including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Tamil Nadu.
The acquisition of VIPL not only boosts Adani Power’s installed capacity but also aligns with its broader strategy of infrastructure-led growth.
The company aims to reach a total operational capacity of 30,670 MW by 2030, contributing significantly to India’s energy security and low-carbon energy transition.
This successful turnaround of a distressed asset underlines Adani Power’s ability to strategically manage and scale its operations in a complex and regulated sector, while delivering on the nation’s rising energy demands.
