Prime Minister Narendra Modi received Ghana’s highest civilian award, the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, from President John Dramani Mahama on July 3, during his landmark visit to Accra.

Upon receiving the honour, PM Modi expressed deep gratitude on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “I thank the people and Government of Ghana for conferring ‘I thank the people and Government of Ghana for conferring ‘The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana’ upon me. This honour is dedicated to the bright future of our youth, their aspirations, our rich cultural diversity and the historical ties between India and Ghana. This honour is also a responsibility; to keep working towards stronger India-Ghana friendship. India will always stand with the people of Ghana and continue to contribute as a trusted friend and development partner.”

Recognition of statesmanship & global leadership

Ghana honoured Prime Minister Modi for his distinguished statesmanship and influential global leadership.

On X, he reaffirmed that it symbolises not just personal honour but also the aspirations of 1.4 billion Indians and the deep, long-standing India‑Ghana ties.

India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, echoed this sentiment, calling it ‘a recognition of his efforts in strengthening the voice of the Global South’ and ‘a testament to our cooperation and friendship with Ghana’.

In an official statement, India’s Ministry of External Affairs noted that PM Modi accepted the honour on behalf of India’s youth, their cultural heritage, and diversity.

He thanked the people and government of Ghana for this gesture and emphasised that it deepens bilateral friendship while placing a significant responsibility on him to enhance India‑Ghana relations.

Prime Minister Modi remarked with confidence that his historic visit—the first by an Indian PM to Ghana in three decades—would inject new momentum into bilateral ties, elevating the relationship to a comprehensive partnership.

Earlier during the visit, he held extensive talks with President Mahama, resulting in expanded cooperation across trade, investment, agriculture, digital infrastructure, and capacity building.

The visit also marks the first leg of a five-nation tour, highlighting India’s growing outreach to the Global South and Africa.

By dedicating this prestigious honour to India’s youth, culture, and friendship with Ghana, PM Modi reinforced a shared vision for inclusive development, cultural exchange, and stronger global cooperation, setting the stage for deeper collaboration between the two nations.
