Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday, held delegation-level talks with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama during his first official bilateral visit to the West African nation, marking the first such visit by an Indian Prime Minister in over three decades.
Both leaders reaffirmed their countries’ strong and historic ties while pledging to deepen cooperation across critical sectors.
Upon his arrival at Jubilee House in Accra, Prime Minister Modi was warmly received by President Mahama in a ceremonial welcome that included a traditional Ghanaian music and dance performance, a Guard of Honour, and a 21-gun salute.

The Ministry of External Affairs described the reception as reflective of the special relationship between the two nations.
Unity against terrorism
In his remarks following the talks, PM Modi thanked Ghana for its continued support in India’s fight against terrorism.
“We are in full agreement that terrorism is the enemy of humanity,” he stated.
Both leaders committed to enhancing mutual cooperation in counter-terrorism efforts and reaffirmed the need for global unity against the threat.
PM Modi also expressed appreciation for Ghana’s solidarity following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, calling it a powerful example of friendship and shared values.
Discussions also touched on economic cooperation, development, and the need for reforms in global institutions.
PM Modi underscored that ‘India and Ghana share a vision of inclusive global governance and development’. He praised Ghana’s vibrant democracy and its role as a leading voice in West Africa.
The leaders agreed to elevate the bilateral relationship to a comprehensive partnership.
Talks included enhancing cooperation in trade, agriculture, infrastructure, health, and digital public infrastructure, with India offering support in implementing UPI-based payment systems.
Strengthening bilateral cooperation
Indian investments in Ghana have exceeded $2 billion across nearly 900 projects, and bilateral trade has surpassed $3 billion.
PM Modi set a target to double trade within five years and reaffirmed India’s support for Ghana’s economic recovery under the IMF programme.
The two leaders exchanged four Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) covering culture, standards, Ayurveda and traditional medicine, and foreign ministry consultations.
These agreements aim to institutionalise cooperation and enhance diplomatic mechanisms.
President Mahama announced that Ghana would confer the country’s highest civilian honour, the ‘Order of the Star of Ghana’, on Prime Minister Modi at the State Banquet, recognising the deepening bilateral relationship.
Both leaders reiterated their commitment to South-South cooperation and democratic values, with PM Modi inviting President Mahama to visit India at a mutually convenient time.
The visit marks a key milestone in India-Ghana relations and signals growing collaboration between India and the African continent.
