Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday as part of his historic state visit to Accra—the first such visit by an Indian Prime Minister in over three decades.
Held at Jubilee House, Ghana’s presidential palace, the meeting underlined the warm and enduring ties between India and Ghana.
President Mahama personally welcomed PM Modi upon his arrival, reflecting the significance of the occasion and the deep-rooted friendship between the two nations.
The leaders held discussions in both restricted and delegation-level formats, covering a wide range of strategic areas.
A comprehensive partnership for the future
In their talks, the two leaders agreed to elevate the bilateral relationship to a comprehensive partnership.
Discussions focused on expanding cooperation in key sectors, including trade and investment, agriculture, capacity building, digital technology, and infrastructure.
They also emphasised the importance of strengthening people-to-people ties, with PM Modi expressing appreciation for the care shown to the 15,000-strong Indian community in Ghana.
Both leaders welcomed the growth in bilateral trade and Indian investments in Ghana.
They also agreed to enhance collaboration in defence and security, and reaffirmed their commitment to development cooperation, particularly through India-supported infrastructure and skill-building projects.
Technology & health as pillars of partnership
India offered to share its experiences in digital public infrastructure—especially the Unified Payment Interface (UPI)—as well as in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and traditional medicine.
The two sides exchanged four Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) covering cooperation in culture, standards, Ayurveda and traditional medicine, and the establishment of a Joint Commission Mechanism between their foreign ministries.
PM Modi reiterated India’s deep commitment to voicing the concerns of the Global South and thanked Ghana for its consistent solidarity.

The leaders also discussed global issues such as United Nations reforms and agreed to intensify their joint efforts in the global fight against terrorism.
PM Modi thanked President Mahama for his strong support following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and congratulated Ghana on its rising international profile, including its role on the UN Human Rights Council and the recent election of Ghana’s Foreign Minister as Commonwealth Secretary-General.
The meeting concluded with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to democratic values, sustainable development, and global peace.
In a gesture of goodwill, President Mahama hosted a state banquet in honour of PM Modi.
In return, PM Modi extended a warm invitation to President Mahama to visit India at a mutually convenient time.
This visit marks a significant step forward in deepening India-Ghana relations and advancing cooperation with the wider African continent.
