India’s Renewable Energy Output Soars 24% In H1 2025; Hits Record Share In Power Mix

India’s renewable power grew 24.4% in January-June 2025, marking the fastest growth in three years amid falling coal demand.

India’s renewable energy generation surged by 24.4% in the first half of 2025, reaching 134.43 billion kilowatt-hours. This marks the fastest growth since 2022, according to a detailed analysis of grid regulator data reviewed recently.

Renewable energy’s share, excluding hydropower, crossed a record 17% in June, showcasing rapid clean energy adoption nationwide.

Coal-based electricity generation, India’s primary energy source, dropped nearly 3% during the same six-month period in 2025.

Overall power generation growth slowed to 1.5% in the first half, down from 5.8% recorded in 2024.

A milder summer, driven by an early monsoon, reduced electricity demand, especially from coal-fired power plants across the country.

Lower economic activity further contributed to reduced coal consumption, leading to record-high domestic coal stockpiles.

India, the world’s second-largest coal consumer after China, also significantly reduced coal imports during this period.

Experts expect renewable energy to maintain strong growth, with 32 gigawatts (GW) of new capacity likely added in 2025. In comparison, India added about 28 GW of renewable capacity during the entire year of 2024, official records confirm.

Government data reveals 16.3 GW of wind and solar capacity was already added between January and May this year.

The country accelerated renewable additions after missing its 2022 target of 175 GW due to earlier project delays.

India now aims to reach 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity, including hydro and nuclear, by the year 2030. This ambitious target nearly doubles the current installed clean energy capacity of 235.6 GW as of mid-2025.

Industry analysts believe the goal is achievable but may extend to 2032 if challenges persist in execution. They stressed that modernising the power grid and investing in energy storage solutions are crucial for long-term renewable growth.

India’s renewable energy momentum reflects strong policy support, global climate commitments, and the urgent need to reduce emissions.
