Elon Musk’s satellite internet venture, Starlink, has officially commenced operations in Sri Lanka as of Wednesday.
This move places Sri Lanka as the third country in South Asia, alongside Bhutan and Bangladesh, to gain access to Starlink’s satellite-based broadband, making it another of India’s neighbours to join the network.
The launch was announced via the social media platform X, where the company posted, “Starlink’s high-speed, low-latency internet is now available in Sri Lanka!”

In India, Starlink appears to be nearing the final stages before a full-scale rollout.
The company recently obtained a crucial licence from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), a milestone that comes nearly three years after its initial application.
Media reports suggest services in India could go live within two months.
The last step involves formal approval from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe).
A draft letter of intent has already been issued to Starlink, and once signed by both parties, the company will be permitted to begin offering its services in India.
Starlink delivers connectivity using a network of low-Earth orbit satellites.
With over 6,750 satellites currently in service, it maintains the world’s largest satellite constellation.
The company says its technology offers reliable, low-latency internet suitable for underserved and remote areas.
In addition to Sri Lanka, Starlink is already active across several Asian nations, including:
- Mongolia,
- Japan,
- The Philippines,
- Malaysia,
- Indonesia,
- Jordan,
- Yemen, and
- Azerbaijan
Worldwide, Starlink provides internet services in more than 100 countries, catering to both residential users and those requiring mobile coverage.
Plans for home users are typically offered in two formats:
- Residential Lite, for lower data consumption, and
- Residential, aimed at users with higher bandwidth needs
