India’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes have driven production and sales worth over ₹16.5 lakh crore and created more than 12 lakh jobs so far, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on 25 June.

Goyal addressed officials from key ministries during a review meeting, where he highlighted the need to focus on sectors with global competitiveness.

Emphasis on self-reliance and exports

The minister stressed the importance of self-reliance and boosting export competitiveness. He urged ministries to develop high-quality skilled manpower and work with the National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (NICDC) to resolve infrastructure gaps.

Goyal revealed that ₹21,534 crore in incentives have been disbursed across 12 sectors up to March 2025. These sectors include electronics, pharma, IT hardware, automobiles, textiles, food processing, and more. Total investments have reached ₹1.76 lakh crore under the PLI schemes.

The pharma sector reported ₹2.66 lakh crore in cumulative sales, with ₹1.7 lakh crore from exports. The food processing sector created jobs for over 3.4 lakh people.

The bulk drug segment helped India shift from being a net importer to a net exporter. Millet procurement by beneficiaries rose nearly fourfold in two years.

Goyal urged ministries to draft a five-year roadmap to step up investment and incentive disbursement. The government launched the PLI schemes in 2021 for 14 sectors with a total outlay of ₹1.97 lakh crore.
