US President Donald Trump has walked back his earlier claim of personally halting a potential war between India and Pakistan.
At a White House event, President Trump had said, “I stopped the war between Pakistan and India,” but later, during a press interaction in the Oval Office on Wednesday, he revised his statement.
Donald Trump credited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir, calling them ‘two very smart people’ who chose to de-escalate tensions rather than engage in a potentially nuclear conflict.
“I’m so happy there was a deal that two smart people and their teams worked out,” he said while hosting General Munir for lunch.
India denies mediation
India strongly denied any US mediation in the matter.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated that PM Modi, in a phone call with President Trump, clarified that Pakistan initiated the dialogue for de-escalation.
“Due to India’s firm action, Pakistan was compelled to request a cessation of military operations,” the official readout said.
Despite India’s denial, Donald Trump publicly thanked both leaders. “This man (Asim Munir) was extremely influential in stopping it from the Pakistan side, PM Modi from the India side, and others,” he said, adding that he had spoken with Indian Prime Minister Modi recently about ongoing trade negotiations.
President Trump also discussed Iran, asserting his deep understanding of the situation while noting Pakistan’s role as Iran’s representative in the US.
“They’re not happy about anything… but maybe they know Iran better,” he remarked, trying to balance ties with both Pakistan and Israel.
By hosting General Munir instead of Pakistan’s civilian leadership, Donald Trump signalled a preference for engaging directly with Pakistan’s military establishment, a shift from previous administrations.
The episode highlights the sensitive nature of international diplomacy between nuclear powers and the sharp contrast between the official narratives from Washington and New Delhi regarding third-party mediation and sovereignty.
