
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada.
The meeting celebrated 25 years of the India-Germany Strategic Partnership and focused on further deepening bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors.
PM Modi, in a post on X, stated, “Delighted to hold talks with Chancellor Friedrich Merz on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Canada. India and Germany are close friends, connected by shared values. This year we mark 25 years of our Strategic Partnership. We discussed how to work even more closely in areas like IT, manufacturing, semiconductors, sustainability, research and innovation,”

Focus on defence & counter-terrorism
The two leaders also addressed issues of security and terrorism.
PM Modi said that India and Germany would continue to strengthen cooperation in defence and counter-terrorism, including efforts to combat terror financing.
He expressed appreciation for Germany’s solidarity with India in its fight against terrorism.
This was the first meeting between the leaders since Chancellor Merz took office in May 2025.
PM Modi congratulated him on his recent electoral victory and assumption of office.
He also expressed gratitude for the German government’s condolences following the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted the significance of the meeting, noting that both leaders agreed to deepen cooperation in trade and investment, defence, sustainable development, technology, education, and mobility.
Both sides acknowledged the sustained momentum in their bilateral relations and resolved to further diversify and expand the scope of their strategic engagement.
Chancellor Merz and PM Modi also exchanged views on key regional and global developments.
The leaders concluded their meeting with a mutual commitment to advance shared goals and continue building on the strong foundation of their Strategic Partnership.
Prime Minister Modi also extended an invitation to Chancellor Merz to visit India at a mutually convenient time.
As India and Germany celebrate a quarter-century of strategic ties, this meeting underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing global challenges and driving innovation and sustainability.
