The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to consider a petition demanding a nationwide ban on what it described as ‘illegal’ betting applications, along with the implementation of stringent regulations for online gaming and fantasy sports.
A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and NK Singh issued a notice to the central government, seeking its response on the matter.
However, the court chose not to extend notices to state governments at this stage.
The plea, filed as a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) by an individual identifying as a social activist, humanitarian, and President of the Global Peace Initiative.
According to the petitioner, the case has been brought in the interest of the general public and to protect the integrity of Indian society from the harmful effects of unregulated betting platforms.
Citing a First Information Report (FIR) registered in Telangana earlier this year, the petitioner highlighted that 25 celebrities – including Bollywood actors, cricketers, and social media influencers – accused of promoting betting apps that allegedly misled users.
The petition also referred to media reports about 24 suicides in Telangana linked to online betting-related debt, underscoring the psychological and financial harm caused by such platforms.
Betting Apps Masked As Fantasy Sports
The petitioner argued that many of these apps operate under the guise of fantasy sports or skill-based gaming, when in reality they constitute gambling, banned in several Indian states under the Public Gambling Act of 1867.
The plea emphasised the absence of a uniform central law to regulate such platforms.
Filed directly before the apex court, the petition aims to shield young and vulnerable users from exploitation and calls for comprehensive legislative action to address the growing influence of online betting.
The petitioner also claims recognition as a global peace ambassador, with multiple countries – including the US, Norway, Sudan, and India – nominating them for the Nobel Peace Prize.
He stated that his efforts have prevented several major conflicts and led to the rescue of hundreds of orphans and street children worldwide.
