The Group of Seven (G7) nations issued a strong statement on Saturday, condemning the ‘egregious’ terrorist attack that occurred in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, on April 22.
The attack has intensified tensions between India and Pakistan, following alleged missile exchanges. The G7 urged both nations to avoid further escalation and engage in dialogue.
“We, the G7 Foreign Ministers, strongly condemn the egregious terrorist attack in Pahalgam, and urge maximum restraint from both India and Pakistan,” the official statement read.
It highlighted that further military escalation poses a serious risk to regional stability and expressed concern for civilian safety on both sides of the border.
A Plea For Diplomacy
Reinforcing their stance, the G7 called for immediate de-escalation and encouraged direct talks between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
The ministers emphasised their support for a ‘swift and lasting diplomatic resolution’ and affirmed that they are closely monitoring the situation.
Canada, which holds the G7 Presidency in 2025, will host the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, from June 15 to 17.
The unfolding South Asian crisis is likely to figure prominently during the summit deliberations.
India Responds To Border Drone Threats
Meanwhile, India’s Ministry of Defence issued a detailed statement on Saturday, confirming increased drone activity across 26 sensitive locations along the International Border and the Line of Control (LoC).
These locations include Baramulla, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Ferozpur, and Bhuj, among others.
A Ministry spokesperson reported an incident in Ferozpur where an armed drone targeted a civilian area, injuring members of a local family.
Security forces sanitised the area and provided medical aid to the injured.
High Alert & Civilian Advisory
The Ministry reassured the public that the armed forces are on high alert, actively tracking and neutralising all aerial threats through counter-drone systems.
Citizens, particularly those in border regions, have been advised to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary movement, and follow all safety guidelines issued by local authorities.
“While there is no cause for panic, heightened vigilance and adherence to precautionary measures are essential,” the Ministry stated.
Leadership Response
In light of the rising tensions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level security meeting on Friday.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, and the Chiefs of the Indian Armed Forces attended the meeting, demonstrating the government’s serious approach and strong commitment to national security.
These developments underline the urgent need for regional de-escalation and a return to dialogue, as advocated by the G7 and international observers.
