The Border Security Force (BSF) on Thursday night killed seven terrorists during a foiled infiltration attempt along the International Border in Samba district, Jammu and Kashmir.
The encounter marks one of the most serious recent escalations amid heightened tensions along the border.
BSF Foils Infiltration Bid Backed By Terrorists
According to BSF sources, a heavily armed group of terrorists attempted to cross into Indian territory around 11 PM on Thursday. Pakistan Rangers allegedly provided covering fire during the infiltration attempt in the Samba district.
“Seven terrorists have been killed during this foiled infiltration bid. The operation is still underway,” said a senior BSF official.
Terrorists Attempt Entry After Drone, Missile Attacks Fail
Before the infiltration attempt, alert Indian troops neutralised drones and low-range missiles targeting defence installations in Jammu, Samba, and RS Pura.
After those attempts failed, terrorists backed by Pakistani troops tried to breach the border at Samba.
A BSF spokesperson confirmed that the intruding terrorists eventually retreated under pressure from Indian forces.
Civilian Casualties In Uri Due To Mortar Shelling
Separately, in the Uri sector of Baramulla district, Pakistani mortar shelling on civilian areas killed one woman and injured another on Thursday evening.
Officials identified the deceased as Nargis Begum and the injured as Hafeeza Begum.
A shell struck a civilian vehicle travelling from Razerwani to Baramulla near Mohura.
Meanwhile, Pakistani forces continued heavy shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri, Tangdhar, Poonch, and Rajouri, as well as in Samba on the International Border.
Air Defence Neutralises Threats In Jammu
The Indian Armed Forces’ air defence systems successfully intercepted and neutralised drones and low-range missiles targeting Jammu airport and other military installations.
Sirens warned residents of potential attacks, triggering a blackout in Jammu and Srinagar.
Authorities have since restored electricity in both cities.
Schools And Universities Shut Amid Security Threats
In response to the volatile situation, the Jammu and Kashmir administration announced the closure of all educational institutions across the region.
Sakina Itoo, the Education Minister, confirmed that all private and government schools, colleges, and universities would remain closed on Friday and Saturday for the safety of students.
Kashmir University Registrar Naseer Iqbal also confirmed the suspension of classes on Friday.
