Following Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s remarks opposing war with Pakistan, another senior Congress figure has stirred controversy with comments on the recent terror attack.
Maharashtra Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar on Monday questioned the accounts given by victims, who stated that the terrorists asked about their religion before opening fire.
“The government should take responsibility for the Pahalgam terrorist attack. They (the government) are saying that terrorists killed people after asking them (about their religion). Do terrorists have time for all this? Some people say that this did not happen. Terrorists have no caste or religion. Identify those responsible and take appropriate action. This is the sentiment of the country,” Wadettiwar stated.
Commenting further on Siddaramaiah’s ‘not in favour of war’ position, Wadettiwar told reporters that if the government was prepared for war, it should proceed with it.
“All this is to divert people’s attention. He (CM Siddaramaiah) said there should be no war with Pakistan, but if the government is ready for war, then do it. You (government) talk about stopping Pakistan’s water. It will take 20 years to do so,” he further added.
Earlier, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had called for bolstered security in the Kashmir Valley to maintain peace.
“There has been a security lapse in this incident. We are not in favour of war. Officials should tighten security measures in the Kashmir region. The central government should increase security to ensure peace in Kashmir,” Siddaramaiah asserted.
The BJP responded sharply, with party MP Sambit Patra accusing the Congress of echoing Pakistan’s rhetoric.
“Congress should expel Siddaramaiah and Timmapur. But Congress will not do that because this is the real face of Congress. Rahul Gandhi demanded proof of the surgical strike. Today, Rahul Gandhi, Siddaramaiah, and Timmapur’s statements are being broadcast on Pakistani TV. Pakistan considers them as their sympathisers,” Patra alleged.
The Pahalgam terror attack is one of the most devastating assaults in the Valley since the 2019 Pulwama incident, which claimed the lives of 40 CRPF personnel.
Following the Pahalgam attack, India has adopted strong measures against Pakistan for its continued support of cross-border terrorism.
