Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has openly acknowledged the team’s ongoing struggles in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) following a five-wicket defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
Dhoni pointed out that, despite multiple issues throughout the season, the most pressing problem for CSK has been their inability to post competitive scores.
After being put in to bat first, CSK’s batting line-up once again faltered.
Only young Ayush Mhatre, mid-season signing Dewald Brevis, and a late surge by Deepak Hooda made notable contributions, pushing the total to a modest 154 runs.
Despite briefly regaining some momentum in the second half of the match, the total proved insufficient as CSK succumbed to their fourth consecutive defeat at home.
Dhoni’s Concerns Over Team’s Inconsistency
In his post-match interview, Dhoni expressed concern over the team’s repeated low scores, stating that the ongoing issue made it difficult for CSK to perform consistently in the tournament.

“In a tournament like this, if one or two players are struggling, you can work around it. But when the majority of the team is not performing, it becomes a challenge,” Dhoni said.
“You have to make changes, but when several players are underperforming, it’s inevitable. You can’t keep going without posting enough runs on the board—it is essential to assess the conditions and set the right target.”
CSK At The Bottom Of The IPL 2025 Table
The loss leaves Chennai Super Kings at the bottom of the IPL 2025 table, with only two wins from nine matches.
SRH, who were in a similar position heading into the match, secured their first-ever win at the Chepauk, giving their playoff hopes a boost.
Despite their struggles, Dhoni remains focused on the importance of adjusting and improving in the remaining matches.
His message emphasises the need for timely changes and a renewed focus on team performance.
SRH’s Reddy Reflects On RCB’s Late Surge In 2024
On the other side, SRH’s all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, who played a crucial role in the win with an unbeaten 49-run stand alongside Kamindu Mendis, spoke confidently about his team’s future.
Drawing inspiration from Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) remarkable late surge in IPL 2024, Reddy hopes SRH can replicate that feat and make a playoff push.
“Like RCB last year, we are in a similar situation, and we believe we can win seven matches in a row,” Reddy said. “It’s all about giving 100 per cent, and the rest we will take as it comes.”
CSK’s Outlook For The Rest Of The Season
As the season progresses, CSK will need to address their batting woes and regain their momentum quickly if they are to remain in the hunt for a playoff spot.
With Dhoni’s leadership and a few strategic changes, CSK will be hoping to turn their fortunes around in the remaining games of IPL 2025.
