On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to former Prime Minister Chandrashekhar on his birth anniversary, praising him for always prioritizing national interest in his political journey.
In a message shared on his social media, PM Modi recalled the late leader’s contributions toward social harmony and nation-building.
Taking to X, Prime Minister Modi posted, “Humble tribute to former Prime Minister Chandrashekhar Ji on his birth anniversary. He always kept national interest paramount in his politics. His efforts for social harmony and nation-building will always be remembered.”

PM Modi also shared two photos of the late leader.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also remembered Chandrashekhar, describing him as a powerful voice for the oppressed and a nationalist leader.
Writing in Hindi on his X handle, CM Yogi stated, “A humble tribute to the strong voice of the oppressed and deprived, popular politician and nationalist thinker, former Prime Minister Chandrashekhar Ji, on his birth anniversary! His commitment towards nation-building, social justice, and public welfare is a guiding light for all of us.”

Chandrashekhar: A Fiery Leader, Parliamentarian, & Former Prime Minister
Chandrashekhar was born on 1 July 1927, in Ibrahimpatti village in the Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh.
Deeply involved in politics from his student days, he earned recognition as a fiery and passionate leader.
He began his parliamentary career in 1962 after being elected from Uttar Pradesh on a Praja Socialist Party (PSP) ticket.
Except for the years between 1984 and 1989, he remained a Member of Parliament.
He joined the Indian National Congress in 1964 but left the party during the Emergency in 1975.
That year, he was arrested under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act and wrote his noted work, ‘Jail Diary’, while in custody.
In 1995, Chandrashekhar received the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award.
During his tenure as President of the Janata Party, he led a padayatra from Kanyakumari to Rajghat between January and June 1983, raising awareness about social equality and justice.
Chandrashekhar took office as Prime Minister on 10 November 1990, following the resignation of Vishwanath Pratap Singh.
He was backed by various political parties, including the Congress.
However, after the Congress withdrew its support, he stepped down in March 1991.
He passed away on 8 July 2007, in New Delhi at the age of 80.
