California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced a lawsuit against the Trump administration, challenging what he called the President’s ‘unlawful tariffs’ that are impacting both the state and national economies.

In a statement on Wednesday, Newsom stated, “President Trump’s unlawful tariffs are wreaking chaos on California families, businesses, and our economy – driving up prices and threatening jobs. We’re standing up for American families who can’t afford to let the chaos continue.”

In a separate message on X, the Governor added, “Donald Trump does not have the authority to impose these destructive and chaotic tariffs. America stands to lose too much.”

Newsom confirmed that California is taking the matter to court.

He further emphasized California’s key role in trade and manufacturing, noting, “California is the largest manufacturing state in our union, one of the largest trading partners around the globe. No state will be impacted more than the state of California as it relates to the unilateral authority that’s been asserted by the Trump administration to impose the largest tax increases in modern American history.”

Impact Of Tariffs On US Goods Movement

The Governor also pointed out that 40% of all US goods move through two major California ports, with nearly half of those goods originating from China.

The lawsuit, filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, challenges Trump’s use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to justify the tariffs.

State officials argue the law does not give the President authority to act alone in imposing such tariffs.

California, the most populous state and the nation’s largest economy, is the first to legally oppose the Trump administration on this issue, according to Xinhua.

The state leads the US in imports, accounting for over $675 billion in two-way trade that supports millions of jobs.
Mexico, Canada, and China are California’s top export destinations, collectively purchasing almost $67 billion in goods in 2024 – more than a third of the state’s $183 billion total exports, according to the Governor’s office.
