India is preparing for Tahawwur Rana’s arrival in the national capital on Thursday after the United States extradited him. Authorities accuse Rana in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.
The authorities expect to hold the 64-year-old in a high-security ward at Delhi’s Tihar Jail.
Extradition Process And Arrival Of Tahawwur Rana
The US has extradited Rana, a Pakistan-born Canadian national, to India after a prolonged legal battle.
They are bringing him to stand trial for his involvement in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which claimed the lives of 166 people.
A special chartered flight carrying Rana left the US on Wednesday, April 9, marking a significant step in India’s pursuit of justice for the terror attack.
Tihar Jail Prepared For Rana’s Custody
Upon his arrival in Delhi, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) will take Rana into custody. The NIA, along with the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), coordinated his extradition.
Sources confirmed that Tihar Jail has made all arrangements to hold him in a high-security ward.
He is expected to be presented before a Delhi court shortly after his arrival.
Charges Against Rana And His Connections
Rana faces multiple charges, including criminal conspiracy, waging war against the Government of India, murder, forgery, and violations under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
He closely associated with David Coleman Headley, one of the main conspirators behind the Mumbai attacks, and had strong links with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and the terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba.
Legal Proceedings And Further Steps
Although authorities have finalized Rana’s extradition, the Mumbai Police have not yet received official communication about transferring him to the city.
His legal battle to avoid extradition to India was extensive, but with his arrival, India will soon proceed with legal action against him.
