Uttar Pradesh Transport Minister Daya Shankar Singh paid heartfelt tribute to Jagdishwar Nigam, a 1923-batch ICS officer, at the Town Hall in Ballia. In his speech, he called Nigam a symbol of courage who challenged the British Raj during the Quit India Movement.
On August 19, 1942, Nigam famously hoisted the Indian flag at the Collector’s office, defying colonial rule. This bold move briefly declared Ballia independent. Singh called it a “moment of historic pride” and urged citizens to keep Nigam’s memory alive.
SJR Films To Chronicle Ballia’s Hero
During the event, SJR Films announced a new film project based on Nigam’s life. The Minister welcomed the move, calling it “a powerful step to take Ballia’s story to the world.” Public excitement is growing, with many urging Shah Rukh Khan to play Nigam.
Importantly, Singh pledged government support for the film. “We will take this legacy to new heights,” he said. He stressed the importance of sharing local heroes’ stories with future generations.
Adding to the occasion, a new book titled “Real Story Administrator: Jagdishwar Nigam Vs British Raj – 19 August 1942” was released. It details Nigam’s defiance and his role in Ballia’s short-lived freedom. The book is now available on Amazon Kindle, and features on both the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and Cultural Portal of the Government of India.
Written by his daughter Sheela Darbari and granddaughters Raj Darbari and Janice Darbari, the book captures the courage of a forgotten freedom fighter.
The event reignited pride in Ballia’s revolutionary history. With a film and book on the horizon, Jagdishwar Nigam’s legacy is set to inspire the nation once again.
