The government has recovered ₹416 crore from ineligible farmers who received benefits under the PM-Kisan scheme since its launch in 2019, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
The PM-Kisan scheme provides ₹6,000 annually in three equal installments to eligible landholding farmers.
Since its inception, the government has disbursed over ₹3.68 lakh crore in 19 installments directly into Aadhaar-linked bank accounts.
Chouhan stated that the scheme initially operated on a trust-based system, where states registered beneficiaries based on self-certification.
In the early phase, the government also relaxed Aadhaar seeding requirements for some states, leading to unintended benefits for ineligible recipients.
To address this, the government has implemented stricter verification measures.

Land seeding, Aadhaar-based payments, and eKYC have now been made mandatory to ensure that only eligible farmers receive financial aid.
PM-Kisan, launched to provide income support to farmers, has been a crucial financial aid program for the agricultural sector.
However, the recent recovery highlights the government’s efforts to prevent misuse and ensure transparency.
The stricter eligibility checks aim to enhance efficiency and accountability in the distribution process.
With these new measures, the government seeks to prevent ineligible payments and strengthen the implementation of PM-Kisan, ensuring benefits reach genuine farmers across the country.
