Nagpur Violence: 50 Arrested, 33 Police Injured As Curfew Remains In Place

Nagpur remains tense under curfew after protests over Mughal ruler Aurangzeb’s tomb led to violence. Police have arrested over 50 people so far.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis blamed the violence on “heightened emotions” triggered by the release of the movie Chhaava. The film depicts Aurangzeb’s brutal atrocities against Sambhaji Maharaj.

Over 30 Police Injured In Clashes

Fadnavis informed the Maharashtra assembly that 33 police officers, including three deputy commissioners, suffered injuries in the violence. A senior officer was even attacked with an axe.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde criticized the glorification of Aurangzeb. He questioned why Maharashtra should allow such actions. Union Minister Ramdas Athawale also linked the anger to the movie Chhaava, which highlighted Aurangzeb’s role in Sambhaji Maharaj’s death.

VHP And Opposition React

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) demanded strict action against those involved in the violence. VHP’s Milind Parande alleged that a specific community carried out the attacks. He also claimed that Bajrang Dal workers were targeted.

Opposition leaders blamed the BJP for the unrest. AAP MP Sanjay Singh accused the BJP of spreading hatred in Nagpur and across Maharashtra. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray claimed the BJP aimed to create a situation similar to Manipur.

Nagpur Police have launched an investigation using CCTV and social media. Authorities are working to identify others involved. The situation remains tense, but officials have urged citizens to maintain peace.
