PM Modi Emphasizes India’s Crucial Role In AI Development

Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a bold statement during a three-hour conversation with American AI researcher and podcaster Lex Fridman on Sunday, asserting that artificial intelligence (AI) will remain incomplete without India.

Speaking openly from his heart, Modi emphasized that his statement was made with responsibility and conviction.

“One thing I’m about to say might sound strong, and it may even upset some people, but since you’ve asked, I’ll speak openly from my heart. No matter what the world does with AI, it will remain incomplete without India,” Modi said. His words come as India continues to make strides in AI development, positioning itself as a key player in the global AI landscape.

AI Development Is A Collaborative Effort

During the discussion, Modi stressed that the development of AI is fundamentally a global collaboration. He pointed out that no single nation can develop AI entirely on its own. “Tell me, you’ve heard my speech at the AI Summit in Paris on global cooperation. What do you think? Can anyone develop AI entirely on their own? What is your perspective on this?” the Prime Minister asked Fridman, emphasizing the importance of shared experiences and mutual learning.

Modi highlighted India’s unique approach to AI, which goes beyond theoretical models.

India is actively developing AI-driven applications tailored to specific use cases, ensuring that AI technology is accessible to all sections of society.

India’s AI-Driven Initiatives And Innovations

India’s government has launched several key initiatives under the IndiaAI Mission, marking a significant milestone in the country’s journey toward ethical and responsible AI development.

These initiatives further aim to foster AI-driven research, innovation, and skill development, ensuring that India remains at the forefront of AI progress.

Notable initiatives include AIKosha (IndiaAI Datasets Platform), the AI Compute Portal, the AI Competency Framework for Public Sector Officials, and the IndiaAI Startups Global Acceleration Program.

The AI Compute Portal, for instance, will initially provide access to 10,000 GPUs, with plans to add 8,693 more, offering subsidized AI compute services to support startups, researchers, and enterprises across the country.

India’s Expanding Talent Pool And 5G Advancements

PM Modi also shared insights on India’s rapid progress in 5G technology. While the world initially doubted India’s capabilities, the country has now become the fastest nation to roll out comprehensive 5G networks.

“The world initially believed we were far behind, but once we started, we became the fastest nation globally to roll out comprehensive 5G networks,” said Modi.

He further noted the vast talent pool available in India, referencing an experience shared by an American company executive.

According to the executive, advertising for engineers in the US would yield only a handful of applicants, whereas in India, the response would be so large that a football field couldn’t accommodate them.

This, Modi pointed out, is India’s greatest strength—the vast and skilled talent pool that drives technological advancements.

Human Intelligence Powers AI’s Future

The Prime Minister concluded by reaffirming that human intelligence fundamentally powers AI. “After all, artificial intelligence is powered, shaped, and guided by human intelligence,” he stated. Without genuine human intelligence, AI can’t thrive or progress sustainably.

That real intelligence exists abundantly in India’s youth and talent pool, and I believe that’s our greatest asset,” Modi told Fridman.

India’s expanding role in AI, supported by its rich talent pool and government initiatives, positions the nation as an indispensable force in the global AI revolution.
