Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a two-day State Visit to Mauritius, aiming to elevate the partnership between the two nations across multiple sectors. He will attend Mauritius’ National Day celebrations on March 12 as the Chief Guest.
Deepening India-Mauritius Relations
Before his departure, PM Modi emphasized India’s historical, cultural, and geographical ties with Mauritius. He described the island nation as a key maritime neighbor and a gateway to Africa. He highlighted the trust, democratic values, and diversity that form the foundation of their relationship.
PM Modi recalled the significant progress made over the last decade through people-centric initiatives. He expressed confidence that his visit would strengthen cooperation in trade, security, maritime safety, health, and capacity building.
A contingent of Indian defense forces, including a Navy ship, an Indian Navy helicopter, the Akash Ganga Skydiving Team, and NCC cadets, will participate in Mauritius’ National Day celebrations.
Maritime Security And Vision SAGAR
India’s Vision SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) remains central to its Indian Ocean strategy. PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to regional peace and prosperity through strong maritime cooperation with Mauritius.
During the visit, India and Mauritius will sign a technical agreement to share white-shipping information. This will enhance maritime security, protect trade corridors, and prevent illegal activities. Another MoU on ocean observation and research will help Mauritius manage its maritime zone effectively.
PM Modi’s last visit to Mauritius in 2015 marked a turning point in maritime collaboration. This visit is expected to further strengthen the strategic partnership and reinforce India’s long-standing ties with Mauritius.
