The Supreme Court has intervened in the case of Irfan Solanki, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Kanpur, by instructing the High Court to urgently hear his petition for a stay on his conviction.
During the hearing of the petition filed by SP MLA Irfan Solanki from the Sisamau assembly seat in Kanpur, the petitioner’s lawyer stated that the High Court would hear the case today.
Following this, the court postponed the hearing.
Solanki, currently serving a 7-year prison sentence, seeks legal relief after his conviction in a high-profile case.
He remains in Maharajganj jail while his petition is pending.

The conviction stems from an incident in Jajmau, Kanpur, where Irfan Solanki and four others were found guilty of setting fire to the house of Nazir Fatima in 2022.
On June 7, 2024, the Kanpur Special MP/MLA Court sentenced Solanki to 7 years in prison.
During the hearing, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Solanki, argued that the repeated delays in the High Court’s hearings have hindered the progress of the case.
This prompted the Supreme Court to intervene, urging the High Court to expedite the proceedings and reach a swift resolution.
