The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has reserved its verdict on a petition regarding open defecation at the Kumbh Mela.
During the proceedings, the NGT stressed that the state government must take immediate responsibility for addressing sanitation issues at the Kumbh Mela site.
Uttar Pradesh government officials assured the Tribunal that they had made extensive arrangements to ensure the event’s sanitation needs were adequately met.
Details Of The Petition &Allegations
Nipun Bhushan filed the petition, alleging that insufficient sanitation facilities forced thousands of individuals to relieve themselves in the open along the banks of the Ganga River during the Kumbh Mela.
The petitioner highlighted that this lack of sanitation was causing significant pollution of the river, severely affecting its environmental health.
Court’s Observations & Order
Previously, the NGT issued notices to the Uttar Pradesh government, the Prayagraj Mela Authority, and the UP Pollution Control Board, demanding responses to the claims raised.
The Tribunal has now directed these agencies to submit comprehensive plans detailing how they would treat wastewater from the event, address the issue of open defecation, and ensure proper disposal of waste.
Additionally, the NGT sought clarity on funding, land provisions, and the roles of responsible agencies in implementing these measures.
Environmental Compensation Demanded
The petitioner has demanded ₹10 crore as environmental compensation from the Uttar Pradesh government for its failure to effectively manage sanitation during the Kumbh Mela.
This, according to the petitioner, led to pollution and environmental degradation at the sacred river site.
The NGT has promised to issue a detailed ruling on this case in the coming weeks.
