Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar recently announced significant improvements in India’s electricity supply.
In rural areas, the average power supply has increased from 12.5 hours in 2014 to 22.6 hours per day in 2025.
Meanwhile, urban areas now receive 23.4 hours of power daily, compared to the previous average of 20 hours.
Government Initiatives Driving Change
Khattar credited initiatives like the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY), PM Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana (SAUBHAGYA), and Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan for Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG) for this progress.
He emphasized that the government’s goal is 100% electrification of households across the country.
Expansion Of Power Capacity & Infrastructure
Khattar also highlighted the significant increase in India’s power generation capacity, with fossil-based capacity rising from 168 GW in 2014 to 246 GW in January 2025, and non-fossil-based capacity soaring from 80 GW in 2014 to 220 GW in 2025.
Furthermore, the transmission network expanded from 2.91 lakh circuit km in 2014 to 4.92 lakh circuit km in 2025.
India Becomes A Net Exporter Of Power
The minister noted that India has transitioned from being a net importer of power to a net exporter, with net exports reaching 1,625 MU in 2025.
He also pointed out that energy shortages in the country have decreased dramatically, from 4.2% in 2014 to just 0.1% in 2025.
Improving Power Distribution & Reducing Losses
Khattar discussed the government’s continued efforts to improve power distribution, with the country’s Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses decreasing from 22.62% in 2014 to 15% in 2025.
He further stated that the goal is to reduce these losses to 10% by 2030.
These developments mark a significant milestone for India’s energy sector, driven by ongoing reforms and government initiatives aimed at ensuring better power accessibility and sustainability across the country.
