The AI Action Summit, held in Paris, emphasized the importance of creating a diverse and inclusive artificial intelligence ecosystem, with a strong focus on human rights, ethics, and safety. The event brought together leaders from around the world to discuss how AI can be developed in a manner that prioritizes people and the planet.
Strengthening Global AI Efforts
Co-chaired by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and France’s President Emmanuel Macron, the summit called for urgent action to address global inequalities in AI development and stressed the need for capacity-building in developing nations. A joint statement was issued after the summit, with 58 countries, the European Union, and the African Union as signatories. However, notable absences included the United States and the United Kingdom, both of whom declined to sign the statement.

The statement, titled “Inclusive and Sustainable Artificial Intelligence for People and the Planet,” underscored the necessity of reinforcing the diversity of the AI ecosystem. It also highlighted the need for a human-centric, ethical, and trustworthy approach to AI, ensuring its safety and security. “This Summit has highlighted the importance of reinforcing the diversity of the AI ecosystem,” the statement read. “It has laid out an open, multistakeholder, and inclusive approach to make AI human rights-based, human-centric, ethical, safe, secure, and trustworthy, while addressing the urgent need to narrow inequalities and assist developing countries in AI capacity-building.”
Acknowledging Existing Initiatives
The summit also recognized the significance of ongoing international initiatives in the field of AI. It acknowledged efforts by the United Nations, UNESCO, the G7, and the G20, among others, in advancing global AI governance. “We acknowledge the importance of existing multilateral initiatives on AI, including the United Nations General Assembly Resolutions, the Global Digital Compact, the UNESCO Recommendation on Ethics of AI, and the African Union’s Continental AI Strategy,” the statement said.
Setting Priorities For The Future Of AI
The summit outlined several priorities for the future development of AI. These include promoting accessibility to AI, ensuring its ethical development, fostering innovation, and ensuring its sustainability. The statement emphasized the importance of creating an inclusive and transparent environment for AI, one that reduces digital divides and fosters economic growth without allowing for market concentration. It also stressed the need to shape AI in a way that positively impacts the future of work and labor markets while supporting sustainable development.
“We have affirmed the following main priorities: promoting AI accessibility to reduce digital divides; ensuring AI is open, inclusive, transparent, ethical, safe, secure, and trustworthy; making AI innovation thrive by enabling conditions for development and avoiding market concentration; and encouraging AI deployment that fosters sustainable growth,” the statement concluded.
Strengthening International Cooperation
The summit also reiterated the importance of international cooperation in AI governance. Leaders at the event agreed that collaborative efforts and coordination are vital to ensuring that AI development is beneficial for all countries and communities.
Prime Minister Modi, who co-chaired the summit with President Macron, is currently in France for a visit from February 10-12. Following the summit, Modi will travel to the United States for a meeting with President Donald Trump and senior U.S. officials on February 12-13.
