India’s evolving strategic ties with France are playing a key role in stabilizing an emerging Indo-Atlantic security framework. While the Quad foreign ministers reaffirmed their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific, India’s growing bilateral engagement with France provides a stabilizing counterbalance.
France has been a consistent ally of India, even before the Cold War ended. It was among the first Western nations to supply India with advanced fighter jets, starting with the Mirage 2000 in the early 1980s, long before the Rafale deal. Additionally, France refrained from criticizing India’s nuclear tests in 1998 and maintained bilateral nuclear cooperation despite global pressure.
Strategic Autonomy And India’s Evolving Foreign Policy
India continues to assert its strategic autonomy by deepening its partnership with France while balancing relationships with global powers. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has emphasized India’s independent approach to foreign policy, resisting pressure from Western allies. This was evident during the Ukraine war when India refused to stop importing Russian oil despite pressure from Western nations, including the US.
At the same time, India did not defend Russia’s actions in Ukraine. Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged both Russia and Ukraine to resolve the conflict through dialogue, signaling India’s balanced stance. This approach aligns with India’s long-term vision of maintaining strong partnerships while safeguarding national interests.
France’s Role in India’s Maritime Security
France plays a significant role in India’s maritime security. Its Reunion Island in the southern Indian Ocean, coupled with India’s military presence in the Andaman and Lakshadweep Islands, strengthens regional security. France has also conducted joint naval exercises with India, reinforcing their commitment to safeguarding key maritime routes.
Meanwhile, geopolitical shifts, including potential US policy changes under a future Trump administration, could impact global alliances. India closely watches developments, including US-Canada-Greenland tensions and the strategic future of the Chagos Islands. France’s consistent approach to geo-economics and geostrategy makes it a valuable partner for India amid an unpredictable global landscape.
