The Union Cabinet approved the decision to establish an eighth pay commission marking a significant move in a busy fortnight filled with several key decisions and schemes launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The announcement comes as Modi has dubbed 2025 a year for major policy actions aimed at propelling India’s growth and welfare initiatives.
Union Cabinet Unveils High-Profile Developments
In the first half of January, leading up to the Budget, the government unveiled several high-profile developments.
These include the commissioning of three indigenously built naval combatants and the launch of Namo Bharat trains connecting Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. It also included the opening of the Sonamarg tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir, and the establishment of a bulk drug park and green hydrogen hub in Andhra Pradesh.
Government sources highlighted Thursday that these early initiatives signal a year full of activity, with the Prime Minister committed to making decisions that will stimulate economic growth and enhance welfare programs. “Together, we are shaping a developed India, where every citizen will play a vital role in building a brighter tomorrow,” the Prime Minister said.
Cabinet’s Focus On Farmer Welfare
The year began with a strong emphasis on farmer welfare. During the first cabinet meeting, the government approved the extension of a one-time special package for diammonium phosphate (DAP), ensuring that farmers continue to have access to affordable fertilizer.
This move is expected to provide relief to the agricultural community as the country prepares for another planting season.
On Saturday, Prime Minister Modi will distribute 65 lakh property cards across 50,000 villages as part of the Swamitva Scheme. This initiative aims to provide villagers with records of their property rights. It also empowers them with legal documentation that can improve access to services and financial support.
