Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi created a buzz in Parliament on Monday by carrying a handbag with “Palestine” inscribed on it. The bag drew the attention of lawmakers and television cameras, fueling discussions about its symbolic message.
Observers see this gesture as Priyanka’s show of solidarity with Palestinians amid the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict. She has been outspoken on the issue, describing Israeli actions in Gaza as “barbaric and inhuman.”
Photos of Priyanka with the bag quickly went viral on social media. While some users applauded her stance, others criticized her open support for Palestine.
This act follows her recent meeting with Palestine embassy official Abed Elrazeg Abu Jazer. The diplomat met Priyanka at her residence to congratulate her on her Lok Sabha victory from Wayanad. During the meeting, Abu Jazer urged India to take a leadership role in negotiating a ceasefire in the Israel-Gaza war.
Priyanka has previously condemned Israel’s military actions, calling them violations of international law. In July, she stated on X (formerly Twitter) that the world must condemn Israel’s “genocidal actions” and push for an end to the violence.
The controversy comes in the wake of escalating tensions in Gaza. After the October 7, 2023, Hamas terror attack in Israel, which killed over 1,000 Israelis, Israel launched a large-scale military operation targeting Hamas in Palestine. India strongly condemned the attack and demanded the immediate release of hostages.
Priyanka’s symbolic statement has reignited debates on India’s role and stance in the Israel-Palestine conflict.
