Union Cabinet Approves 'One Nation, One Election' Initiative

The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the ‘one nation, one election’ proposal. The government is expected to introduce a comprehensive bill on the matter during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan strongly endorsed the concept of simultaneous elections on Wednesday. Speaking at an event in Kurukshetra as part of the International Gita festival, Chouhan argued that frequent elections were hindering the country’s progress.

He praised the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that India is on a path to becoming a “glorious, prosperous, and powerful” nation. He added that soon, India would be recognized as the “Vishwa Guru” (world leader).

However, Chouhan highlighted frequent elections as a major obstacle to development, pointing out that election preparations occur year-round. “When Lok Sabha elections are over, Assembly elections follow. After states like Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, and Jharkhand, Delhi assembly elections are next,” he said.

In September, the government accepted recommendations from a high-level committee to hold simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies in phases.

The Cabinet had previously approved the report by the Ram Nath Kovind Committee, which advocates for simultaneous elections across the country.
