Sarbananda Sonowal Highlights Northeast’s Transformation Since 2014

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, on Friday, outlined the significant progress made in the Northeast region since 2014. He emphasized remarkable advancements in infrastructure, transportation, education, and organic farming, marking the region’s transformation into a key development hub.

Budget Allocation Surge: 300% Increase

Sarbananda Sonowal speach highlighted that the Northeast has seen a dramatic rise in budget allocation. The region’s funding increased by over 300%, from Rs 36,108 crore in 2014 to Rs 94,680 crore in FY 2023-24. This boost reflects the government’s commitment to bridging the developmental gap.

National Highways: 28% Growth
Infrastructure improvements are evident in the road sector. The number of National Highways (NHs) has grown from 80 in 2014 to 103 in 2023. Currently, over 4,016 km of road projects are underway, enhancing connectivity and fostering economic growth.

Railways: Electrification and Expansion

The region’s railway network has also seen significant upgrades. Over 193 km of rail lines have been commissioned annually, and the Northeast now boasts 100% electrification of broad-gauge lines, ensuring greater sustainability and efficiency. Additionally, the railway budget for the region has risen by 370%.

Aviation: Boost in Airports and Flights
The aviation sector in the Northeast has flourished, with 17 operational airports, up from just a few in 2014. Weekly flights have surged by 113%, increasing connectivity and boosting tourism and trade.

Education and Organic Farming
Education and agriculture have been key focus areas for development. The number of universities in the region has grown by 39%. Meanwhile, over 1.55 lakh hectares have been dedicated to organic farming, supporting sustainable agricultural practices.

4G Connectivity and Digital Growth

The region has also made strides in digital infrastructure. Nearly every part of the Northeast is now covered by 4G services, ensuring better connectivity and digital inclusion, especially in remote areas.

Inland Waterways: Sustainable Transport
Sonowal also highlighted the revival of inland waterways, which offer an eco-friendly and cost-effective transport option. This initiative, aligned with PM Modi’s vision, aims to strengthen the region’s riverine networks and promote sustainable development.

The Northeast has evolved into a hub of growth, fueled by strategic investments and targeted initiatives. With advancements in infrastructure, education, agriculture, and connectivity, the region is now a prime example of India’s inclusive development model.
