The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is intensifying its focus on the alleged lapses in the post-mortem report of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, who was brutally raped and murdered in August. Officials suspect these irregularities may indicate tampering with evidence in the high-profile case.
CBI Examines Other Autopsy Reports
As part of the probe, the CBI has obtained reports of other autopsies conducted on the same day as the victim’s post-mortem. According to sources, these reports, along with the victim’s, have been forwarded to forensic experts. The investigators further aim to identify qualitative discrepancies between the victim’s autopsy report and others conducted on that day to substantiate potential tampering claims.
Unusual Protocol Breach Raises Questions
Investigators are also examining why the hospital authorities performed the victim’s post-mortem after sunset, violating standard protocols. This procedural anomaly, coupled with the unusually brief time taken to complete the autopsy, has raised suspicions.

Additionally, officials noted the poor quality of the video recording of the post-mortem, allegedly conducted in dim lighting, as another critical lapse under scrutiny.

The investigation is currently proceeding along two parallel lines. The first focuses on the “rape and murder crime,” while the second concerns the “tampering and altering of evidence.”
- Biological Evidence: This forms the foundation for prosecuting the alleged rape and murder. Based on available biological evidence, the CBI has identified civic volunteer Sanjay Roy as the sole prime accused in its initial charge sheet.
- Circumstantial Evidence: This will play a pivotal role in establishing the tampering of evidence. Key suspects in this aspect include former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh and former Station House Officer (SHO) of Tala Police Station, Abhijit Mondal.
