Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25: Captaincy Is Responsibility; Not A Title, Says Bumrah

Bumrah emphasized that captaincy is about responsibility, not just a title. “I’ve always loved responsibility. I wanted to take on tough jobs since I was a child. It adds a new challenge for me,” he said in the pre-match press conference

Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah will captain India for the second time in the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test at Perth, with regular skipper Rohit Sharma unavailable. Bumrah, who previously led India during the rescheduled fifth Test against England in Edgbaston in July 2022, shared his thoughts on captaining the side.

Bumrah’s Leadership Philosophy

Known for his calm under pressure, Bumrah emphasized that captaincy is about responsibility, not just a title. “I’ve always loved responsibility. I wanted to take on tough jobs since I was a child. It adds a new challenge for me,” he said in the pre-match press conference.

Though his captaincy is temporary, Bumrah expressed a willingness to take on leadership roles in the future. “I’m not looking to replace Rohit, he is doing a wonderful job. Right now, it’s one game, and I’m focused on the present,” Bumrah added.

Developing His Own Leadership Style

Bumrah acknowledged the influence of previous captains like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma but stressed the importance of finding his own leadership style. “You can’t blindly copy anyone. My style is based on instincts, just like my bowling,” he stated. He also addressed the challenges of being a bowler-captain, saying it gives him an advantage in managing his workload.

Proud of his opportunity to captain India in Test cricket, Bumrah concluded, “Leading your country is the greatest honour. Few players get the chance to play Test cricket, and even fewer get to captain.”
