In-flight passengers can now access WiFi Inside the Plane as India’s Telecom Regulator has amended the connectivity rules. However, passengers will only be able to use Wi-Fi when allowed.
The government has updated its ‘Flight and Maritime Connectivity Rules’ to enhance mobile communication services in Indian airspace. According to the newly notified ‘Flight and Maritime Connectivity (Amendment) Rules’, 2024, mobile communication services will now be allowed on aircraft at a minimum altitude of 3,000 meters. This regulation is aimed at minimizing interference with terrestrial mobile networks during flight.
Under the revised rules, internet services via WiFi Inside the Plane will be available, but only when electronic devices are permitted for use. This provision ensures that passengers can access in-flight internet once the aircraft reaches a suitable altitude and when allowed by the airline.
The amendment, which was notified on Monday, aims to align with modern aviation and communication needs. While ensuring that mobile networks on the ground remain unaffected. This move is expected to improve connectivity options for passengers, particularly during long-haul flights.
The new regulations reflect the government’s commitment to enhancing the aviation experience while maintaining necessary safeguards against interference.
