Sikkim Soldierathon: A Record-Breaking Marathon

The Eastern Command of the Indian Army and Tri Shakti Corps joined forces with Fitistan Ek Fit Bharat to host the inaugural Sikkim Soldierathon at Palzor Stadium. This exciting event drew over 1,600 runners competing in half marathon, 10 km, and 5 km races, making it the largest race ever held in the state.

Promoting Sports Tourism

The Sikkim Soldierathon aims to boost sports tourism in the region. Consequently, it allows visitors from across India to immerse themselves in the beauty, culture, and historical heritage of Sikkim. Runners from 129 cities across 22 states eagerly traveled to participate in this unique marathon.

A Grand Opening

Major General Amit Khabtiyal officially flagged off the marathon, accompanied by notable figures such as Fitistan Ek Fit Bharat founder Mrs. Shilpa Bhagat, marathon enthusiast Amar Subba, Dronacharya awardee Sandhya Gurung, Brigadier Nagarajan, and Mridula Agarwal.

During the opening, Major General Khabtiyal warmly welcomed all participants, encouraging them to embrace the spirit of sports. He assured the crowd that the Indian Army stands by every athlete in Sikkim and across the nation.

Celebrating National Pride

Mrs. Shilpa Bhagat commended the Indian Army for its vital role in nation-building. Furthermore, she emphasized Fitistan Ek Fit Bharat’s dedication to realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a Fit India, alongside the Army’s efforts.

The race’s tagline, “Run For Sikkim – Run With Soldiers,” resonated deeply with the local community, reinforcing the event’s strong connection to both sports and national pride.

Post-Race Festivities

Following the race, the celebration continued with vibrant performances from Indian Army soldiers and the Sikkim Tourism Department. Traditional dances such as Khukri, Bhangra, Marathi Mardani, and Gatka captivated the audience, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Acknowledging Support

Major Surendra Poonia, Vishisht Seva Medal and founder of Soldierathon, expressed heartfelt gratitude to NSS volunteers and the Sikkim administration for their invaluable support. Established under the guidance of former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, Soldierathon has grown into one of the country’s most significant marathons honoring soldiers.
