The Supreme Court has upheld the Bombay High Court’s decision to cancel the lookout notice against actress Rhea Chakraborty, her brother Shouvik, and her father Indrajit Chakraborty. The CBI had issued this notice in 2020 during the investigation into actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death. Rhea and her family challenged the notice, which the Bombay High Court canceled in February 2024. The Maharashtra government later appealed this decision in the Supreme Court, but the court dismissed their petition.
CBI Warned Against Frivolous Petitions
During the hearing, Justices B.R. Gavai and K.V. Vishwanathan cautioned the CBI, calling the petition “frivolous” and unnecessary. The bench warned the CBI that filing such cases just because the accused is a high-profile individual could lead to consequences. The court remarked that if the CBI wished to proceed, they might face a fine and strong remarks.
Family Faced Restrictions in Sushant Singh Rajput Case
In August 2020, the CBI had issued a lookout circular against Rhea, her brother, and her father after Sushant Singh Rajput’s family filed a case in Patna demanding a probe into his death. The case was later transferred to the CBI, which issued the notice restricting their travel. With the Supreme Court’s decision, the Bombay High Court order stands, granting relief to Rhea and her family from the travel restrictions.
