India used the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of Heads of Government (CHG) meeting on Wednesday to call for urgent reforms in the UN Security Council (UNSC). External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, addressing the meeting in Islamabad, emphasized the need for “reformed multilateralism” and urged the SCO to lead this change.
Jaishankar Calls for Inclusive and Democratic Security Council
Jaishankar stressed that the Security Council must reinvent itself to become more representative, inclusive, and democratic. He said comprehensive reform in both permanent and non-permanent categories is essential. Jaishankar referred to the July 2024 Astana recognition, which highlighted the need for developing countries to have better representation.
India has been pushing for a permanent seat in the UNSC but has faced resistance from some current members.
India Highlights Global Initiatives
Jaishankar also showcased India’s global contributions, including the International Solar Alliance, Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, and the Global Biofuel Alliance. He noted India’s promotion of sustainable practices like Yoga and millet consumption and highlighted the country’s achievements in digital public infrastructure and women-led development.
The minister sent a firm message to Pakistan, identifying “terrorism, extremism, and separatism” as barriers to regional cooperation. He warned that cross-border terrorism undermines efforts to promote trade, connectivity, and people-to-people exchanges.
