Arvind Kejriwal, the national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and former Chief Minister of Delhi, officially vacated his Civil Lines residence on Friday and relocated to a new government bungalow on Feroze Shah Road, Lutyens’ Delhi.
This change in accommodation comes in the aftermath of Kejriwal’s resignation following his involvement in the Delhi Liquor Policy case.
Kejriwal, who had earlier been residing in a government bungalow near the Delhi Assembly, made the move with his family after a traditional prayer ceremony at his new residence.
Ashok Mittal, AAP’s Rajya Sabha member from Punjab, originally received the Feroze Shah Road property, located near the party’s headquarters and Kejriwal’s constituency in New Delhi.
The shift in residence follows Kejriwal’s decision to step down from his position as Chief Minister, a role he held until his name surfaced in the controversial liquor policy investigation.
Kejriwal Vows Return Only With Public’s Certificate Of Honesty
His resignation marked a turning point, as he announced that he would not return to public office unless cleared by the people’s mandate.
“Let the public decide whether I am honest or corrupt,” Kejriwal stated during his resignation speech, stressing that only after receiving a ‘certificate of honesty’ from the citizens would he consider resuming his duties.
Following his resignation, AAP leaders and supporters scrambled to find a suitable residence for Kejriwal. Several party functionaries, including councillors and MPs, offered their homes to the former CM.
Ultimately, the search concluded when Ashok Mittal extended his government-allotted accommodation to Kejriwal.
Kejriwal’s move mirrors a similar shift by his close ally, former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.
Sisodia, after his arrest in connection with the same liquor policy scandal, had vacated his official residence, which was later assigned to Delhi’s new Chief Minister, Atishi. He now resides in the official bungalow of AAP MP Harbhajan Singh.
Kejriwal’s current residence, allocated to Members of Parliament, will serve as his home at least until the conclusion of the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.
With the election season looming, the former CM remains firm on his stance, reiterating that he will seek the people’s judgement before deciding his next political step.
