On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unveil the ‘Pradhan Mantri-Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyan’ (PMJUGA) in Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh, marking an important step toward boosting the socio-economic upliftment of India’s tribal communities.

The initiative coincides with the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and underscores the government’s focus on inclusive growth, particularly in tribal-dominated regions.

The PMJUGA is likely to promote comprehensive development in over 63,000 tribal villages spread across 549 districts.

The ambitious scheme, backed by a budget of Rs 79,156 crore, aims to transform the livelihoods of more than 5 crore individuals from tribal communities by improving infrastructure and access to basic services.

The programme plans to build 20 lakh homes, lay 25,000 km of roads, and provide clean drinking water, electricity, and cooking gas to underserved areas.

One of the unique aspects of PMJUGA is its emphasis on both modern development and cultural preservation.

The scheme intends to establish 100 tribal markets, mobile health units, schools, and skill centres while supporting traditional tribal agriculture and horticulture.

Additionally, it aims to preserve the rich cultural heritage of tribal communities.

PM Modi To Meet Tribal Representatives

After the launch at Vinoba Bhave University, Prime Minister Modi is likely to meet with representatives from 33 tribal groups, highlighting his government’s commitment to engaging directly with indigenous communities.

Later in the day, PM Modi will address the concluding event of the BJP’s ‘Parivartan Yatra’ at Hazaribagh’s Gandhi Maidan.

The Yatra, which began on 20 September under the leadership of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, has traversed 76 of Jharkhand’s 81 Assembly constituencies.

This visit marks the second in just over two weeks for the Prime Minister, following his 15 September inauguration of six Vande Bharat Express trains in Jamshedpur.

The launch of PMJUGA also adds to a series of major initiatives PM Modi has previously introduced from Jharkhand, including the ‘Ayushman Bharat Yojana’ in 2018, the ‘PM Kisan Maandhan Yojana’ in 2019, and the ‘Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra’ in 2023.

The unveiling of this new initiative aligns with the Prime Minister’s broader vision of fostering balanced development across all regions, ensuring that tribal communities, often at the periphery of India’s economic narrative, are brought to the forefront of progress.
