In a recent development, the Department-Related Parliamentary Standing Committees for the 2024-2025 term have been established, with the Congress party securing the leadership of four significant committees, including the one on External Affairs. Notably, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi is a member of the Defence committee.

Each committee comprises members from both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, highlighting a blend of political representation.

The Congress will chair the following key panels:

– Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports: Digvijaya Singh
– Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Food Processing: Charanjit Singh Channi, former Chief Minister of Punjab
– Rural and Panchayati Raj: Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka
– External Affairs: Shashi Tharoor

On the other hand, Radha Mohan Singh from the BJP will chair the Defence committee, while Bhartruhari Mahtab will lead the Finance committee. Other notable appointments include former Union Minister Anurag Thakur and Rajiv Pratap Rudy, who will oversee the Coal, Mines and Steel, and Water Resources committees, respectively. Additionally, the party has appointed BJP’s Nishikant Dubey to chair the Communications and Information Technology committee.

In other key roles, Radha Mohan Das Agrawal of the BJP will head the Home Affairs committee, while TMC’s Dola Sen will lead the Commerce committee. Ram Gopal Yadav of the Samajwadi Party will chair the Health and Family Welfare committee, while Tiruchi Siva of the DMK will lead the Industry committee.

The committee on Communications and Information Technology includes members from various parties, such as SP’s Jaya Bachchan, TMC’s Mahua Moitra, and BJP MPs Anil Baluni and Kangana Ranaut.

Notably, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi is absent from any committee listings. Additionally, major BJP allies, including TDP and Janata Dal (United), will each chair a committee, with Shiv Sena and NCP also heading one committee each.

The newly constituted committees will play critical roles in overseeing legislative matters across diverse sectors and will contribute to India’s governance and policy-making processes.
