In a heated fifth round of discussions on Thursday, the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) deliberating the Waqf Board (Amendment) Bill, 2024, witnessed intense exchanges between BJP parliamentarians and members of the Opposition.
The debate escalated to the point where JPC Chairman Jagdambika Pal found himself in a spirited argument with opposition MPs, reflecting the contentious atmosphere surrounding the proposed amendments.
The meeting concluded with the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) presenting a comprehensive 200-page report opposing the Bill. AIMPLB representatives criticized key provisions, particularly those concerning ‘Waqf By User’ and the authority to be granted to District Magistrates over Waqf matters. “We reject all the amendments,” stated an AIMPLB representative, emphasizing the Board’s position that the Bill is “anti-Islam and anti-Muslims.”

AIMPLB leaders, including Board President Maulana Saifullah Rahmani and Advocate Shamshad, articulated their objections in detail, underscoring the potential negative impact of the amendments.
Tensions Between BJP And Opposition
In contrast, the Pasmanda Muslim Mahaz voiced its support for the proposed changes, calling the Bill “beneficial for 85 percent of Muslims” while urging for the inclusion of Dalits and Adivasis within the Muslim community in its provisions. However, Opposition MPs frequently interrupted their endorsement, further fueling tensions between the BJP and the Opposition.
The BJP MPs expressed frustration at the Opposition’s response, accusing them of being silent when criticisms of the Bill arise from Muslim organizations but causing disruptions when it receives support from other groups.
Additionally, Prof. Faizan Mustafa, Vice Chancellor of Chanakya Law University, criticized the proposal to grant District Magistrates authority over Waqf properties, describing it as “incorrect.” He urged the government to seek consensus before proceeding with the Bill.
Questioning On The Presence Of Amit Shah
During the meeting, Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh and AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi questioned the involvement of Home Minister Amit Shah in the discussions, suggesting the JPC was facing external pressures regarding the Bill.
As the meeting unfolded, various perspectives sparked further debates, highlighting the complexities surrounding the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and its implications for the Muslim community. The charged atmosphere set the stage for continued discussions as the JPC navigates this contentious issue.
